Getting Around

Other Transportation Information

Connecting to the Internet for Google Maps, etc.:
To make your travel plans easier, we recommend renting a portable WiFi. You might rent one in your home country, or rent one at Narita Airport or Haneda Airport upon arrival. At Narita, portable WiFi devices are readily available downstairs near the ticketing for the Narita Express train, as well as in the areas for departing flights and in the shopping area at Narita. They are available in the shopping area and departures area in Haneda Airport as well. Once you have left the airport, you may be able to purchase a SIM card, but it might be difficult to find a shop that will sell you one for short-term use. Disposable phones are not readily available in Japan at any locations, and WiFi is still not available in many areas. We strongly recommend sorting out your WiFi situation prior to your departure or before you leave the airport.

Riding in Taxis:
In general, if you must ride in a taxi, we recommend using taxis only for short distances, as Tokyo is a very big place.

For example, Shibuya Station is big and the signage may be confusing. This is not your fault, but is basically because the station is under constant construction. If you become confused, we recommend taking a taxi to campus. It should not cost more than 1000-1500yen total.

We do not recommend taking a taxi from either airport to the campus, as this may cost well over 20,000yen (US $200). Uber is not really an option in Tokyo, as the company has been mired in lawsuits (the taxi lobby is very powerful here). The cheapest way to travel remains public transportation (train, metro, bus).

We also do not recommend taking a taxi to campus from Tokyo Station, as again, this would be very expensive.

Transportation to Additional Activities:
In general, we will meet a central location, such as Shibuya Station or travel from Komaba I Campus, and go together by train. As long as you stay with the group, you will not need a map.
